It refers to the property that certain syllables carry which makes them stand out from the rest of the word. It seems certain that stressed syllables are made with more effort than unstressed ones; the muscles used seem to expel air more aggressively than for unstressed syllables (Birjandi, 2005)"

Definição em português: "A sílaba tônica é um termo que aplicamos para sílabas isoladas em palavras que possuem mais de uma sílaba. Refere-se à propriedade que certas sílabas possuem que as destacam mais do que o resto da palavra. Nota-se que as sílabas acentuadas (tônicas) são feitas com mais esforço do que as não acentuadas; os músculos usados parecem expelir o ar mais agressivamente do que para sílabas átonas (Birjandi, 2005)."
